When TriMet, a leader in the transit industry, needed assurance that their priority seating signage was meeting ADA's strict standards, they were challenged to find a testing laboratory that could provide that service. “We were fortunates to make contact with the Graphic Communication Institute,” explains Drew Blevins, director of marketing for TriMet, “who helped us understand in absolute terms that our new signage designs were not meeting ADA guidelines for finish gloss and contrast.”
Drawing upon extensive graphic arts production experience, GrCI was able to resolve TriMet's problem by suggesting change in coating methos that reduced surface glare without an increase in manufacturing costs. “We ultimately ended up exceeding the ADA recommendations for contrast and gloss to the delight of our internal staff and our Citizens for Accessible Transporation committee members,” says Blevins. “Working with the GrCI Testing Facility has been enormously useful.”
