GrCI Workshops Masthead

Printing Industry Overview

The printing industry is among the largest employers in today's economy, but knowing how the components of this complex process fit together can be a challenge! Learn how inspiration turns into printed products during this dynamic workshop full of hands-on labs and demonstrations.

Workshop Dates:
March 18-20, 2009

Who Should Attend:
Newly hired sales and customer support personnel, graphic designers and art directors, administrative staff or anyone else needing a clear picture of how today's printing and publishing industry operates.

Day 1 Program: Sales, Service and Prepress
This program reveals how projects destined for ink on paper move from graphic design to the printshop's computer graphics specialists, and explains the crucial role that salespeople and customer support personnel play in that process. We will also examine the new technologies and business practices that are reshaping the relationship between print buyers and suppliers.

You will learn:

~ The key personnel responsible for design and print reproduction.

~ How the role of print salespeople has been changed by the introduction of desktop publishing tools.

~ What tasks are performed by customer service, estimators and production planners.

~ How graphic design differs from prepress.

~ How preflight checks can improve customer satisfaction.

~ Why printing presses use cyan, magenta, yellow and black ink.

~ What makes a digital proof acceptable – or not!

Day 2 Program: Offset and Flexo Printing
This exciting program offers ample hands-on experiences with both offset and flexo presses, and examines the important role of substrates (paper) and inks. We'll also compare flexo and offset with other widely used printing methods, including digital printing, letterpress and screen printing.

You will learn:

~ How to measure the key characteristics of printing ink using a spectrophotometer and other laboratory equipment.

~ The major concerns of operating a printing press.

~ How test forms are used to determine optimal press conditions.

~ Key differences between flexographic and offset printing.

~ How paper is handled by sheetfed and web (rollfed) presses.

~ How multi-color presses achieve registration.

~ The difference between prepress trapping and ink trap on press.

Day 3 Program: Digital Print and Postpress
During this final day, we'll examine the exciting new world of "print on demand" as well as those essential processes that occur after the presses have stopped running: paper folding, binding, die cutting and more. Many printers have also introduced mailing and fulfillment services, so this program will explain how these ventures complement your company's existing print capabilities.

You will learn:

~ The advantages (and disadvantages) of digital print.

~ How to create and output personalized documents.

~ The finishing techniques that can make your project stand out.

~ Which mailing services are easy to offer your customers.

~ The difference between warehousing, kitting and bill-as-release.
